Who doesn’t want a little Aloha in their life? After recently visiting Maui in May [yes a recap is coming soon!] I love the idea of having a little island life at home. The ocean breeze and smell of tropical flowers, anyway…..
My mom, who’s house is currently on the market, nailed the whole tropical oasis and since my DIY teepee and tropical doormat were epic fails I’m taking a page from my mamma. Plus her house is unreal. Set in North County San Diego, this 2 story 3,000+ square foot home is just a few miles off the coast. However, once you set sight on her tropical backyard you’ll find yourself never wanting to leave.
HOW TO CREATE A BACKYARD OASIS
Step One: Have a clear vision and draw it out. Whether you’re channeling the Greek Islands, Mexico or Hawaii pick your vision and run with it. Bonus tip: It helps if you can start with a blank canvas, this backyard was straight dirt and a concrete slab.
Step Two: Create an outdoor BBQ/Bar area. Remember you’re creating a tropical oasis which means tons of gatherings at your house with friends.
Step Three: Extend your house outside. Basically add a cover to you deck/patio area to create a bungalow like vibe.
Step Four: Create various seating options . Oh, and don’t forget your outdoor gas fireplace. Cool beach nights call for a cozy fire.
Step Five: If you have the space, add a pool and don’t forget the baja ledge. [Can you smell the ocean breeze yet?] BTW – it’s salt water pool!
Step Six: Make sure said pool has a waterfall.
Step Seven: Plant lots of palm trees. What’s a tropical oasis without palm trees!!

Oh my goodness, that is an amazing backyard!! We have high hopes for ours, but the previous owners of our house didn't weed or do any type of gardening for several years before they sold it, sooooo we have a loooonnnnggg way to go!
